Catherine Cartier, Trisha Mukherjee and Sara Herschander selected as 2024 Journalism Fellows at Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics (FASPE).
Catherine Cartier and Trisha Mukherjee, OPC Foundation Scholarship winners in 2024 as well as Sara Herschander, a winner in 2022 are part of the 14 journalism students chosen for the 2024 Journalism Program of the Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics (FASPE).
The purpose of the FASPE Journalism Fellowship is to learn about journalism ethics by spending two weeks in Germany and Poland studying historical examples of misreporting of Nazi policies by German and international journalists.
Cartier commented on her FASPE fellowship: “As I lay the foundations for my career in journalism, I seek to prioritize developing an ethical framework, just as I value new skills in reporting, writing, and production. I believe that having a strong ethical foundation will inform every aspect of my journalistic practice, from what topics I report on to how I interact with sources. FASPE will help me to realize my commitment to ethical journalistic practices and provide me with a community of like-minded peers.”
Mukherjee shares, “As I report on human rights issues and interview people from vulnerable communities, I hope to continue deepening my understanding of journalistic ethics. I believe both my sources and readers deserve a solid foundation of trust, and I hope to learn from the successes as well as the failures of journalists covering the Holocaust to better my own sense of journalistic ethics. FASPE journalism is the perfect opportunity to devote my full attention to ethics and learn from faculty and other fellows, all of whom have done incredible work. I'm confident the FASPE fellowship will help me serve my readers better with each story I write going forward.”
According to Herschander, "The world would be a very different place if we invested more time, energy, and foresight into learning from our predecessors' mistakes. I'm thrilled by the opportunity to learn — and continuously put what we've learned into practice — with a community of my peers."
